Young man launches Snobodi brand after trip to Europe canceled during Covid

An Australian outdoorsman who saved up for years to go to Europe only for Covid to cancel his trip has turned the savings into a fashion brand for the slopes – and it was an immediate hit.

Hugh Wilcox, 24, has booked a months-long trip overseas after graduating from college in 2020, but the global pandemic has prevented the dream vacation from coming to fruition.

Instead, the Victorian graduate looked forward to the next Australian ski season – which was later canceled due to further Covid closures – before abandoning his desire to travel and deciding to pour his money into a business at the square.

Snowbodia line of durable and efficient skiwear, was born in April 2022 after two years of conceptualization, planning, design and testing, and earned Hugh a whopping $10,000 paycheck on the very first day of sales .

“I had been saving and dreaming of this trip to Europe for years. Unfortunately that was when Covid hit and like many others the dreams of my first trip to Europe came crashing down around me ” Hugh told FEMAIL.

“What devastated me at the time ended up being a blessing, because the days we spent in lockdown ended up being the opportunity I needed to achieve what I wanted to do.”

Initially believing Covid would pass quickly, Hugh shifted his focus from the failed European summer trip to a possible local snow season.

“That’s when I realized there was absolutely no product that matched my values and style. I found most of the brands were international, but I’m all about supporting Australian owners,” he said.

“I also think technical outerwear is a big investment and should be something you love and own for years to come, but I found creative designs lacking in the industry.

“I had also done a lot of research on environmental initiatives and read about some ethical manufacturing that used recycled materials and could produce high quality outerwear. The idea snowballed from there.

Hugh was planning to launch his fashion brand Snobodi ahead of the 2021 ski season, but once again Covid had other plans and most Australians were forced to cancel their winter trips.

“Once again I was completely bowled over but once again my failed plan ended up being a huge blessing as it gave us another year to continue designing and also testing the equipment at the stranger in Alaska,” he said.

“We had absolutely no financial investors. I’ve always been a thrifty person and juggled multiple jobs while attending college full time,” he said.

“I had saved like crazy for Europe and was hoping to buy property in the future. I was very lucky to have been reimbursed for most of my canceled trip, so when the reimbursements came started to arrive, I used it with the pocket money I had saved up to get things started.

“You could say that Snobodi cost me a summer in Europe plus a small security deposit and it was the best decision I made.”
