Express press service

In a conversation with Pawan Sachdeva, we instantly recognize a dichotomy in his idea of travel. On the one hand, the 48-year-old fashion designer enjoys the sartorial drama he witnesses on the streets of fashion capitals like Milan and New York, but on the other he also wants to be cocooned in nature. What connects these two ideas is his need to be in luxury. “I love staying at the best resorts and hotels while traveling and being pampered. I love luxury travel.

In this interview with The Morning Standard, Shanti Niketan resident shares how travel helps her recharge, her favorite destinations, and more. Extracts…

On the kind of traveler he is…
I love traveling to places where I can see fashion on the street – what people are wearing, how they are dressed, etc. Honestly, that’s what appeals to me the most. Usually when I travel in the summer I go to places where I know I’m going to see a lot of fashion on the streets. I love going to Italy, especially Milan. Then there is Barcelona, Spain. Even London is one of my favorite places to visit (and shop), and then there’s New York [NY]. These are four destinations [Italy, NY, and London are fashion capitals] that I travel regularly…mainly for outreach.

Another aspect that is particularly close to my heart when I travel is to be close to nature. When I’m not traveling for work, I stay in quiet places, away from the hustle and bustle, with fewer people. Such places give me happiness. I like being near the sea and traveling where there are beaches. In Spain, I travel to Barcelona, Marín (beach) and even Madrid.

Adventurer or not…
I’m adventurous but I don’t try to be adventurous when traveling internationally. I usually stick to places I know. Also, since I’m a strict vegetarian, there are too many dietary restrictions when traveling.

Recommendations for other travel enthusiasts…
Everyone has their own personal choices when it comes to travel. For example, some people like to visit places with a lively party scene like Amsterdam. There are others who might prefer lively places that are packed with activity, like Dublin. So it depends on personal preference. I like places where I can spend quality time and spend time in nature. So my idea of travel often revolves around rejuvenating myself and coming back to that zone after relaxing and de-stressing etc. That way I’m sorted for the coming year. I prefer to go to quiet places where I can relax and be pampered. So, I recommend places on the outskirts of cities like Vermont and San Francisco, both in the United States. California has beautiful quiet places.

On your travel bucket list…
I’ve just returned from vacation so I don’t plan on traveling anytime soon. However, around Christmas, I plan to explore Indonesia, especially Bali. From a fashion point of view, there are a lot of possibilities in the markets there. I heard that people like to spend [on fashion] there, and buy what’s trending. Even local designers are excellent in Indonesia.

Apart from that, there are amazing spas and resorts in Bali. I would like to go there and have fun.
