Luxury brand redefines what it means to take the bus from DC to New York City

It is one of the most popular travel lanes in America: the route between Washington, DC and New York. While there are several modes of transportation for shuttling passengers between the two cities, including planes, trains, and bus lines, the trip is generally expensive due to excessively high airline and Amtrak fares. , or the dilapidated condition of the buses serving the road.

A new travel agency, however, is looking to alleviate some of these issues. The Jet luxury coach line, which will enter service on November 11, is an ideal form of transportation connecting the two cosmopolitan cities. The company operates a fleet of four 45-foot coaches, each offering superior comfort and wellness amenities for just 14 passengers.

I had the chance to go aboard for its inaugural ride. Here’s what passengers can expect from the new service.

Ideal drop-off and pick-up points

The Jet uses strategic pickup and drop-off points in each city, in convenient but space-saving areas. In Washington, DC, The Jet starts and ends service near Metro Center; in New York, the pickup and drop-off point is at the Hudson Yards campus. These sites provide passengers with a central downtown location, close to each city’s rail systems, while avoiding busy transit areas. Boarding goes smoothly: arrive five minutes before the departure time, hand your luggage to the driver and check in with the attendant before settling into your reserved seat. According to its site, the company estimates that most trips take around four hours.

Seats that use technology to improve comfort

With 14 attractive seats made with memory foam and gel technology, each passenger has a personal space to lay down and call their own for the duration of the trip. There is an upper compartment for small luggage, enough space for a bag in front of you as well as a hook for your purse, and you can sit back to stretch your legs. Each seat features a deep 70-degree recline, adjustable lumbar support, drop-top table, and a padded pneumatic legrest, operated by air pressure and released with the slight movement of a button . Riding is especially comfortable thanks to The Jet’s Hoverseats, which use motion cancellation technology to compensate for the majority of bumps along the way. It made the ride so smooth that it was easy to forget that I was driving on wheels on a highway. A nice added touch was the blanket left on each seat, making it easy to snuggle up and get warm.

Free drinks and light snacks

Each Jet coach has its own onboard kitchen stocked with healthy drinks and snacks, which are included in the ticket price, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own personal supply of water and food. The company plans to partner with local chefs and restaurants to offer a rotating menu of snack options from both cities (there was no food yet on our maiden voyage). Beer and wine are free, limited to one glass per hour per passenger. An assortment of soft drinks, water and sparkling water is also offered, as well as coffee from the Italian brand Illy. Similar to an airline, each coach is served by an on-board attendant who will provide in-seat service.

Modern spacious bathroom

Normally the most dreaded part of a bus trip is the toilet. But on The Jet, that’s not the case. Unlike typical bus bathrooms, The Jet’s has minimalist contemporary decor and is spacious – you can easily switch from casual to work clothes before your arrival if needed. The mirror over the sink and the full length mirror over the door will help you style your hair and makeup and check out the whole ensemble. The passenger-bathroom ratio is assured, as you will be sharing the facility with only 13 other people at most compared to typical coaches that can accommodate more than 50 passengers. In addition, the attendant frequently checks the toilets.

Free high speed Wi-Fi

I was impressed with the reliable and fast Wi-Fi, which The Jet calls “HiFi WiFi”. This is identical to what Google or Facebook campus shuttles use to ensure that employees always have a reliable internet connection. Even though all passengers want to stream simultaneously, the company says its Wi-Fi system can handle it.

Low price

Another thing travelers will find appealing about the new service? One-way tickets are only $ 99. Ultimately, as the company expands its schedule in 2022, travelers will be able to choose from four daily departures that operate seven days a week, with departure times from both locations chosen to avoid peak traffic: 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. 00, 2:00 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. When the company launches, however, service will be limited to weekend travel, with coaches running Thursday through Monday: Thursday will see both sites depart at 6:45 p.m. Friday at 8 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 6:45 p.m. Saturday at 10 a.m., 4 p.m. Sunday at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m., 6:45 p.m. and Monday at 8 a.m.

Health and safety standards

Each coach has health and safety measures in place, including two Sanuvox UV air filtration systems that kill 99% of germs and bacteria. Each row of seats is also six feet apart, all crew members are vaccinated and passengers must wear masks. The Jet leaves hand sanitizer in every seat, and masks are readily available for all passengers who forgot to bring one.
